Putin ordered the attack

A statement by Russian President Vladimir Putin was first broadcast on TV in the early hours of Thursday (24 February 2022). In which he announced ‘military action’ in the eastern Donbas region of Ukraine. Many Ukrainians who speak Russian live here. Parts of this area have been occupied by Russian-backed rebels since 2014.

Shortly after Putin’s statement was broadcast, news of attacks on Ukrainian military bases started pouring in.

Putin said in this statement that Russia had no plans to annex Ukraine, but this action is being taken in self-defense.

In his address, Putin urged Ukrainian soldiers stationed in eastern Ukraine to lay down their arms and return to their homes.

At the same time, he also said that any interference of external powers during Russia’s attack will be responded to immediately and the attack will be destroyed.

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky, in a video message to the nation, said in a video message about the attack that Putin has completely mounted a offensive against Ukraine. He said Russia has fired missiles at Ukrainian infrastructure and also attacked border guards.

Russia’s Defense Ministry, however, denied the attack on Ukrainian cities, saying it was attacking military infrastructure, air defense and air force with its high-end precision weapons.

Ukraine said tanks and troops were entering from its eastern, south and north borders.

Ukraine’s Border Guard Service (DPSU) said that Russian troops entered the northern Chernihiv region of Ukraine from Belarus and the Sumy region from Russia.

Belarus has long been an ally of Russia. Analysts call it Russia’s ‘client country’.

Along with Luhansk and Kharvik, Russian troops have also reached the Kherson region of Crimea.

The DPSU said that Russia first attacked with its tanks, in which border guards were injured.

An official told the BBC that there have also been reports of troop movement near the southern port city of Odessa.

Ukrainian police say at least eight people have been killed in the attack by Russian forces.

Officials say six people have been killed and seven injured in an attack on a military unit in Podilsk, on the outskirts of Odessa city. There 19 people are missing.

Britain’s Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said he is “distressed by the horrific events in Ukraine” and that President Putin has chosen “the path of bloodshed and devastation by attacking without provocation”.

The British Prime Minister said that he had spoken to the President of Ukraine to discuss how to respond to this and also promised that Britain and its allies would give a decisive answer.

23 February: recognition of two provinces of Ukraine

Russia launched a military operation in Ukraine a day after recognizing two provinces of Eastern Europe. These provinces have declared themselves republics.

Earlier, Russian President Putin, in a televised address to the nation on the night of February 21, said that Russian forces would enter Eastern Europe and work towards establishing peace in separatist regions.

According to the mandate of the President, Russian forces will work to maintain peace in Luhansk and Donetsk.
